Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

25 Aug, 2022

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is a sleep disorder that is characterised by repetitive and involuntary movements of the limbs during sleep. These movements typically occur in a rhythmic pattern, and they can disrupt sleep and lead to daytime sleepiness and fatigue.

In PLMD, the limb movements often involve the legs, although they can also affect the arms. The movements are usually brief and occur at regular intervals, causing partial arousals from sleep. Individuals with PLMD may be unaware of these movements, but they can disturb the sleep of their bed partner.

PLMD is often associated with another sleep disorder called Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), as the uncomfortable sensations experienced in RLS can trigger limb movements in PLMD. However, PLMD can also occur independently of RLS.

The exact cause of PLMD is not fully understood, but it may be related to abnormalities in the central nervous system that control movement during sleep. Factors such as age, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions like iron deficiency or kidney disease can contribute to the development of PLMD.

Treatment for PLMD may involve addressing any underlying medical conditions, if present. Medications may be prescribed to help reduce the limb movements and improve sleep quality. Additionally, maintaining good sleep hygiene practices, managing stress, and avoiding substances that can worsen symptoms (e.g., caffeine or alcohol) can be beneficial.
