Snoring is never normal because it disrupts sleep quality. Snoring is a very common sleep issue characterised by abnormal sounds produced during sleep. It occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is partially obstructed, causing vibrations in the tissues of the throat and airway.
The sound of snoring can vary in intensity and may be disruptive to both the person snoring and their bed partner. The volume of snoring does not always indicate how serious the problem is; sometimes even soft snoring is a symptom of a serious breathing problem in sleep. Snoring can be occasional or persistent, and it can occur in individuals of any age or gender.
Several factors can contribute to snoring, including:
1. Obstructed Nasal Airways: Conditions like nasal congestion, allergies, or a deviated septum can hinder the smooth flow of air through the nose, leading to snoring.
2. Relaxation of Throat Muscles: During sleep, the muscles in the throat tend to relax, narrowing the airway and causing vibrations when breathing.
3. Obesity: Excess weight and fatty tissues in the neck and throat can put pressure on the airway, leading to snoring.
4. Alcohol and Sedatives: Consuming alcohol or certain sedatives before bedtime can relax the muscles in the throat, contributing to snoring.
Snoring is frequently a symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Performing a sleep study is the only way to know if a snorer also has sleep apnoea.
